In March, 2007 news agency “DipInfo” has started its work.

The project is created on the basis of the Saint Petersburg state unitary enterprise “Inpredservice” thaDimitry V. Arbuzov, the adviser to the Chairman of Committee on foreign relations, the coordinator of the projectt provides services to the foreign missions. The information support is provided by “Consul” magazine.

Dmitry V. Arbuzov,
the adviser to the Chairman of Committee on Foreign Relations,
the coordinator of the project.

Saint Petersburg was initially conceived by the founder as capital of Russian Empire. 300 years ago already, at the same time when “Peter the Great’s log cabin” appeared, the representatives of the foreign states started to settle in this territory. Thus by the present time the history of the “diplomatic Petersburg” counts 3 centuries. All this time the life of diplomatic community has been inseparably linked with the daily life of the metropolis. Diplomats have always actively participated in a public and cultural life of the city. Official receptions, days of the foreign states, performances, exhibitions and many other things organized by consulates make complete the high life of modern Saint Petersburg.

Moreover, it is hard to neglect the fact that Saint Petersburg is a large tourist center of Russia. Millions of tourists visit it annually. On the other hand, city dwellers travel with great pleasure around the world. As a consequence, the activity of general consulates gains in importance.

The new “DipInfo” project is aimed to support the activity of the accredited foreign missions and that are the goals and objectives that the government of Saint Petersburg made the state unitary enterprise “Inpredservice” responsible of. The project is of non-commercial character, supported by sponsors and its purpose is to cover the events of diplomatic life in Saint Petersburg.

The news agency in a form of Internet resource is engaged in gathering, processing, storage and publication of information concerning life of diplomats, daily work of consular offices and cultural events held in the city. The access to the data bases of the resource is free of charge. There is also a possibility to subscribe to a mailing list.

The project targets a wide audience. The users of the resource information are meant to be the Russian and foreign citizens who are going to apply for information of the consulates. Preliminary analysis indicates that there is not enough information on the daily work of consulates in the Internet. Some general consulates have their websites but, unfortunately, they are seldom updated and the information is incomplete. As a result the citizens often do not receive the information they are interested in.

We hope that the project will be supported and accepted by the diplomatic community. The efficient information exchange with consular offices is a pledge of successful work of the news agency. The Committee on foreign relations of the city government has optimistically treated the idea of the project and expressed the readiness for cooperation.
